В сентябре-октябре 2010 г. состоялась экспедиция на остров Колгуев. Целью работ, организованных "Советом по морским млекопитающим" совместно с Всемирным фондом природы был сбор опросных данных по моржу в районе острова.

Остров Колгуев находится на юго-востоке Баренцева моря. На нем располагаются небольшое село Бугрино, жители которого живут главным образом за счёт рыбной ловли, охоты и оленеводства. Кроме того на севере острова нефтяная компания ЗАО "АрктикНефть" разрабатывает нефтяное месторождение.

В результате опроса местных жителей, был собран первичный материал по сезонному распределению моржа в прибрежных водах о. Колгуева, расположению лежбищ и сроках их действия. Разработан план дальнейших работ по изучению и сохранению моржей в районе острова.

The expedition to Kolguev Island, from July 27 - August 7, 2010, was organized by the Marine Mammal Council and  WWF Russia.  The purpose of the expedition was to collect survey data on walrus populations.

Kolguev Island is located in the south-eastern Barents Sea , close to a little settlement called "Bugrino." The residents of Bugrino depend on fishing, hunting, and reindeer herding.  On the northern section of the island, CJSC Arctineft, the oil giant, is developing an oilfield.

Primary data on the walrus population was collected through surveying and interviewing local residents.  The data included invaluable information on how the walruses organized themselves into the island's coastal waters.
In addition, the scientists gathered information on the specific location of walrus rookeries as well as the flow of their lives.
Finally, long-term plans and goals for future studies on walruses living in the waters near the island to include a dual-focus on research and conservation, were designed and developed.
